Suffolk Baby New Potatoes

20.06.2011

Freshly harvested from the sandy soils of Suffolk, our Summer baby new potatoes taste sensational.  The potatoes have bright, creamy white, flesh and are wonderfully tender;  a delicious feature on summer menus.  We visited the growers to discover why Suffolk is the perfect county for producing these seasonal gems.

The coastal climate of Suffolk provides the benefits of mild temperatures, less frosts, great light levels and sandy soil; helping the growers to be among the first in the country to grow baby potatoes.  The sandy soils of the Sandlings area enable easy lifting of the potatoes so they emerge in perfect condition.

Garden of Elveden work with an expert team of Suffolk growers to produce the potatoes.  Each grower tends their individual family owned farmland in the Suffolk area and together the growers have more than 100 years of farming knowledge. Every Wednesday, the growers meet up in a field. Jim Wayman explained that Wednesday mornings are a time for the growers to catch up, share their experience and compare crops.  Sharing best practice means that collectively the growers have an unrivalled wealth of knowledge.  All Garden of Elveden's growers are Red Tractor accredited

A commitment to preserving the environment is shared by all the growers, building on the work carried out by their predecessors whose work such as planting fir tree belts to shelter the land can be seen throughout the farms. Hedgerow planting and the allocation of land for wildlife areas are just two of the many initiatives; helping to encourage a rich variety of plants, animals and sea birds.  The creation of an anaerobic biodigester is one of the most recent and impressive developments; this will turn waste product in to energy that can be sold and utilised.

To ensure our customers have the freshest, tastiest baby new potatoes, harvesting is carried out daily prior to the potatoes being washed, packed and delivered. The season lasts until mid-September making the potatoes a wonderful menu choice throughout the summer.  We are confident you will be amazed by the mouth-watering flavour of the Garden of Elveden potatoes and your customers will be equally enamoured.
